Staffworks is hiring a Senior Accountant for our client in the public sector for an immediate start. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the Finance team in managing loans and investments, accounting, budgeting, and reporting functions.

Location: Downtown, Toronto (Hybrid 3 days in office)

Work Type: 6-month contract

Start Date: April 14 2025

  • Responsibilities
    • - Manage the entire loan and investment life cycle from a financial perspective, including:
    • - Updating Executive Leadership on key terms and details of investment/loan agreements.
    • - Ensuring that accurate and current loan or investment data is available for the Finance Unit.
    • - Communicating with lendees/investees as necessary, in collaboration with the Investment Unit.
    • - Assisting the Investment Unit with modifications to investment/loan agreements.
    • - Ensuring compliance with BOF reporting requirements and covenants by the investee/lendee.
    • - Monitoring delinquent investments/loans and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are taken.
    • - Designing and generating accounting and cash flow reports.
    • - Supporting monthly reporting and responding to audit requests related to investments/loans.
    • - Assisting in the implementation of Loan/Asset Management software in collaboration with the Finance and Investment Units.
    • - Provide support to the Head of Financial Services and Controllership, as needed, including:
    • - Assisting with internal monthly and annual reporting following Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).
    • - Contributing to the development of financial policies and procedures.
    • - Conducting research on accounting and taxation matters.
    • - Preparing background materials and analysis for Audit, Ministry of Finance, and Treasury Board requests.
    • - Participating in projects related to the development and implementation of procedures, systems, and practices within the Finance Department.
    • - Optimizing accounting methods within the QuickBooks ledger.
    • - Approving invoices and procurement payments when temporarily granted authority.
    • - Assist the Financial Planning and Analysis team with budgeting and forecasting, as required.
    • - Monitor the performance of BOF’s portfolio of funds/assets, ensuring high levels of stewardship, and preparing management reports (such as valuations, financial reports, annual compliance, and audit documentation).
    • - Develop performance measures for each investment to assess the agency's achievement of its objectives, ensuring reliable financial accountability and continuous improvement in reporting mechanisms.
    This position is based in a normal office environment with no unusual or unpleasant conditions, though there may be periods of high demand that require extended hours. Typical working hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A hybrid work model is in place (3 days in the office, 2 days working remotely).
  • Requirements

    Education and Experience

    • - A university degree in accounting, business, or finance, along with a professional accounting or CFA designation.
    • - At least 5 years of experience in accounting.
    • - A minimum of 5 years of experience in loan and investment management is desirable.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • - Familiarity with government accounting, particularly Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), is an asset.
    • - Proficiency in using computerized accounting systems (QuickBooks) and MS Office software is preferred.
    • - Strong understanding of financial reporting processes, methods, and tools, with the ability to apply financial knowledge to diverse situations and interpret complex financial data.
    • - Experience with valuation methodologies, financial modeling, and evaluating investment risks and economic value.
    • - Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), particularly in reviewing and updating financial models.
    • - Excellent problem-solving and conceptual thinking abilities.
    • - Strong analytical skills to synthesize large amounts of information, assess risks, and identify mitigation strategies.
    • - Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining attention to detail.
    • - Strong verbal and written communication skills for presenting options and recommendations to the Head of Financial Services/Controllership and CFO.
